Basketball tips for the beginners!

/ by

As you may or may not know, basketball is a handball game played between two teams and most adults like playing it for improving health conditions. However, the game requires more practice and skills to ensure optimal results. Beginners who want to become a great basketball player should focus more on their strength as well as the techniques that can help accomplish goals considerably.

The following tips will ultimately shape the abilities of beginners allowing them to gain more advantages.

1. Building core strengths

Foot movements play a key role in a basketball game and beginners should build their core strengths for better footwork. The body should maintain balance levels that can move quickly while playing the game. It is necessary to concentrate more on the thighs, buttocks, back, core muscles, abdominal muscles, and jumping for developing strengths.

2. Learning important techniques

Basketball involves shooting, passing, catching, rebounding, and dribbling techniques which require regular practice. A beginner should learn more about them from videos and other basketball players for meeting essential requirements.

3. Maintaining a healthy diet

Since the game of basketball requires high stamina and energy levels, beginners should take up healthy diets for getting more desireable outcomes. Foods that contain more proteins and carbohydrates will provide high energy levels to a player. It is a wise one to avoid foods that have high sugar and salt ingredients.

4. Understanding mistakes

Beginners will make some mistakes in a basketball game that result in various problems. Hence, it is advisable to understand the mistakes in detail before participating in a game. One can get more ideas about them from senior players to minimize unwanted issues.

5. Setting goals

A beginner player should set the goals ranging from small to bigger ones which ultimately help to work towards them hard. Another thing is that they will encourage players to shape their abilities with high success rates.

6. Practicing more

Practice makes a player become a champion and beginners should spend more time when practicing the playing techniques. Moreover, it enables to defend the ball from the opposite team with ease. Those who practice more can have an edge over the competition. Beginners should even carry out the practice during off seasons for mastering a game efficiently.

7. Keeping an eye on the ball

A beginner should concentrate on how to handle a ball correctly when it comes to defense and other techniques. It is necessary to keep an eye on a ball for quick basketing purposes while playing the game on a court.

Anytime! Thanks for the feedback and it’s okay if you’re short, I was short where I played (even though I’m 6’1″) but I found out you just have to be crafty against those tall as trees individuals you play against. Muggsy Bogues did it, I’m sure you can too!

This are great tips for beginners who wants to learn basketball. Asidw having great diet, practicing is so key towards advancement and becoming a pro in basketball. I have seen raw talents who later failed in this field due to lack and inadequate practice. You want to learn or advance from beginner to a pro, aside doing all that is listed above, you have to take practicing very seriously. Nice article.

Basketball has always been one of my best sports. I love watching people play as much as I love playing it myself. I started playing the sport from childhood and I am still playing. The tips you listed for beginners are what every beginner should understand because without them, basketball will be a boring game for you.

Exactly. Boring due to lack of skill and also, the chance to be plagued with injury. Glad you enjoyed!

An important basketball tip is related to building core strengths and that is conditioning. As a fast-paced game, players need to train for endurance as well as strength. The better-conditioned teams will have the endurance to play strong into the 4th quarter up to the end of the game. I still remember running drills such as suicides at the end of practice to build endurance.

I’ll be honest, I hated conditioning drills, especially suicides haha. However, I’m glad I did them now looking back at it because 15 years of ANY sport will take a toll on the body if it isn’t fit to perform what’s necessary.

Wow thanks for the awesome tips, I have tried playing basketball before but gave up due to the difficulties I face with mastering the game. I really love your tips for basketball beginners especially tip number 3 and  4, understanding your mistakes and having a healthy diet.

I think if I really, consistently put those two tips into practice, it will go a long way to step up my game.

Thanks for this and looking forward to more tips

Just remember, no one will master it overnight! Like everything worth having in life, it takes time but if it’s something you enjoy, it’s a very rewarding experience 🙂

My boys will love to join the basketball team next academic year.  I  am relieved they are leaning in that direction because I will be freaking right now if it was football (a little too rough).   Your list of tips are great.  In addition to excellent physical health,  I also think good mental health is important.  Players need to get plenty of sleep before and after a game or practice.

Yeah football is an entirely different topic. I listened to a podcast once with former NFL players talking about how brutal it really was on the body and I wouldn’t want my kids playing either personally. Just make sure they follow the steps, eat well, exercise, and like you mentioned: get good rest. I’m sure they will be great with practice and it’ll be something they enjoy and can take with them forever 🙂

I believe that good nutrition is essential to any sport, and a high protein and carbohydrate diet is necessary, for not only building muscle, but for the energy needed to perform for the game

Learning correct moves and techniques, are vital as quick turns, and stops, to avoid an opponent and to score are a must.

Fitness is also very important, as a player who has flabby muscles, risks cramps, and torn muscles in a fast game.

Like all sports, practice makes perfect, and the more we practice, the better and smoother our game will become.

Learning tips and moves, through watching videos of professionals is an excellent idea.

Exactly! And just to follow up on the last point you made, one of my coaches in high school always preached watching some high level D1 college schools to learn the intangibles. NBA is fun to watch but there’s more flash and flair to their games and it may not teach kids the fundamentals as well as college. Thanks for the comment!

:D:D:D That’s actually so exciting for me to hear! I used to coach young kids who were just starting out playing organized basketball and it was such a rewarding experience! If this post could help her out in any way, that would be totally worth the time it took to do a little research and write it. Tell her to practice if she enjoys it but most importantly, HAVE FUN!
